seen it

Had not seen it, thanks John L. Jensen! a sad event, but this is decent video I think.

Also, no indication of surprise from John, Joe Willis. He quoted the video title, and also, it is not clear if somebody helped or not. If you stand and stare, as a group, you are helping such a situation by giving it attention and monitoring it while you figure out what (wtf) you might be able to do to lend assistance. Going on your merry way is a lot less helpful and might, perhaps, have left this guy getting punched perhaps lighter one camera and one bike.

Also I could add the dude who videotaped this scored a coup by getting the guy's face, but unfortunately did not get the crime (lock cutting) so clearly on tape. Getting his suspect talking and making threats made for good video. I expect video like this is going to be harder and harder to achieve at the scene of a crime.

I wish some of those other camera phone's on the scene had jumped in and got another angle. That's one good way to help.

What WERE those guys doing there?? They could be concerned citizens or actual backup for the accused lock cutter, its just not clear to me from the video yet.

Also to Davo, thanks for letting everybody know that you have seen it.

Video was labeled June 26 2010 but some of the comments are as recent as week old.

Edit: Joe Willis, your links seem to be borked somehow

"don't steal bikes bro" takes us to a fight in progress, low intensity, where several seem to be supporting one violent action against an accused bike thief.

"Joe Willis, your links seem to be borked somehow" I did the post from my cell so that prob had somthing to do with it.
here is what the initial post was supposed to be,

"Why don't you lock it to a bicycle rack?"

Really?  That's your logic, security guard?  Perfect.

Sounds to me like "Don't snitch on your homeboys"

I dare say, this sounds dangerously close to some racist B.S.

I would love to hear more facts about the events at this scene, but until then why don't you chew on these alternative explanations:
Security guard fears that snitches get stitches, that he has to work at this store in the future and that he is vulnerable. He may even recognize or have had previous dealings with any of those involved.
Security guard considers the criminal justice system to be too severe to warrant sending someone there for the cutting of a lock, committing assault, etc. He thinks that diffusing the situation is preferable to calling a cop and getting a bust in front of his store.
Security guard is in on it, two dudes are in on it, all backup for each other. Not protecting "home boys" not protecting fellows of his race, but actually a co conspirator.
Security guard is not in on it, but is too ignorant to see the benefit or the logic in calling the cops.
Security guard is not in on it, but because he misses some of the action that we get to witness on the video he has not exactly determined that he should intervene as one might think he should having seen the video.
Security guard is acting on orders from his boss that we have no access to.
Security guard is acting on beliefs, preconceptions, misconceptions that we have no access to.

Nice try though

edit: spelling

What a load! Are you serious?

You actually believe what you just typed there?

A decent human dials 911 and lets the authorities figure it out. The security guard is responsible for protecting the property (not individuals). It would not be in the best interest of any property to have criminals hangin around. Connecting the dots is easy. If he knows them he doesn't call 911.

Yeah, this is old.

But it literally still puts the adrenaline taste in my mouth.

And make all the excuses you want, that 'security' guard should be fired.

A couple of months ago I walked out of a Walgreens to see a guy finish cutting a lock on a bike on a bike rack and riding off 5 seconds later. The security guard was standing there doing nothing. I asked him why he didn't say or do anything and he just looked at me like I was an idiot and walked back in the store.

In my experience, security guards are about as useful to me as the one who Minh encountered. I admit I don't have all the facts of this event, and so I reserve judgment.

Gabe is the same person who told me on the chainlink that if several came up to him during a critical mass and told him they did not like what he was doing AT the mass right there and then, somebody might get hurt. Would that be before or after you dialed 911? I'd be glad to bring up the exact quote Gabe since I archived the entire thread, etc.

Gabe, go read my message. I was not really indicating situations I had "belief" in. They were "possible" scenarios that I could not rule out based on the video. I basically just listed out scenarios that could fit the action and yet do not necessarily support the idea that it was just a race based defense tactic which I think is what is meant my "don't snitch on the homeboys". I have encountered this tactic before, for all I know this may be the true or best explanation, but I don't yet have decent facts to support that conclusion.
