I found a Jamis road bike in the alley behind my house. If you can describe in detail and prove that it's yours then you can come and pick it up.

  • Location: Bucktown
  • it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests

Probably the same post here (you were probably putting it up at the same time).  Good eye Moc Artsy.
I suppose you could look at it as cruel. I for one was thrilled to see that post. I'm such a hopeless optimist that I thought surely it had to be my bike. It wasn't, but all it took was an email to find out.

Ads like this one are cruel-- there's absolutely no reason not to give the color and model; any legitimate owner will still be able to tell you the size, bike shop sticker, and a handful of other details, and ought to be able to provide some proof of ownership.

This is just making tens of stolen Jamis victims jump through hoops for no reason.

Any owner who doesn't know the serial number of his own bike doesn't deserve to have it back IMHO.  I would be extremely reluctant to give a bike back that I'd found without that information.

All bike owners should have a full accounting of a bike with a complete listing of components, accessories, size, color, configuration, a photograph, and finally the serial number -and keep it all in a safe place.  A good safe place is someplace like  BikeRegistry.com which is free and something you can do BEFORE your bike is stolen...

And you can put a sticker on it from them which will give the finder a place to start when trying to return a bike they found.
