The Chainlink

I just found out about this group today:  http://travellingtwo.com/7130

Right now they are biking around Texas and doing good.  While I wish I was there right now, I'd like to do something similar.  Would anyone else be up for a superhero ride/service project on MLK day?

There was a Heroes and Villians ride a while back, but I like the idea of dressing as a hero and doing service.

If there is interest, I can start looking into places for us to volunteer, otherwise, I may just show up at some other service project in my cape.

MLK day is 1/17...who knows what the weather will bring.  If it is especially snowy, we could always just spend the day shovelign walks or something, but I'll try to find something better.

What's your super-identity and what bike powers would you want to have?

I've been following this woman's journal.  She's on that ride. The ride sounds very warm-fuzzy-lovey-dovey-hippy-ish.  I can dig a big old helping of warm-fuzzy-lovey-dovey-hippy-ish in my life right now.  With Gravy on top!

Heh, finding her journal was how I found out about the ride.

Warm-fuzzy-lovey-dovey-hippyism sounds really good to me right now too.

You'd make a good superhero, Paul.

This is so me!  : )

A superhero service ride next month...or doing a monthlong cycling service adventure?

I really want to do both.

This is amazing. Depending on my schedule I'm so in!
I'm in too! Need help with ideas? I'll look too and message ya!

Perhaps we should start a Super heros cycling group for the conversation moving forward?

Kelly- Ideas would be great.  I know there are lots of one day, group volunteer opportunities for MLK day, which is why I'm tempted to do it on that day.  However, I know that some people might not have the day off, so it might be easier to do it on Saturday and Sunday.  If you know of something, that would be great.

Paul- If you want to start a group, that woudl be great.  There is already a similar group that kind of fizzled called Swerve Collective. I'm a little wary of starting the group myself and am unsure of my commitment past a ride/project in January.

Also, I just got an email from Zia who is on the Superheros ride happening in Texas right now.  She said that the next full-scale superheros ride is slated to happen in Iowa in Mid-June.  Totally accessible from Chicago if anyone is interested in that.

For the sake of not being redundant, I vote for working in the Swerve Collective: Bike Volunteering group as well.

Chicago Cares does a Day of service in honor of MLK on Saturday the 15th.

We can form a chainlink group so that we are all assigned to the same site.

Celebration of Service Schedule | Saturday, January 15, 2011 | 8 am - 3:30 pm

beginning at 7:45 am

Check in by your last name at Union Station's Great Hall (enter on the west side of Canal between Adams & Jackson).

You'll pick up your volunteer information and goody bag. If you pre-ordered a box lunch or t-shirt, be sure to pick those up as well (watch for signs at these areas).

Remember: wear clothes you won't mind getting dirty. Painting, crafts and building are fun projects but can be messy!

8:25 am

Get energized at the opening ceremony as we all remember why we serve. You'll hear from Chris Gardner, whose life story inspired The Pursuit of Happyness and enjoy music from the Voices of Acme.

9:30 am

Time to serve! Board your bus and set out to improve Chicago and inspire others to keep Dr. King's dream alive.

Lunch (at your project site)

Volunteers need to bring their own lunch or order from the box lunch caterer. Pre-ordered lunches can be picked up after you check-in at Union Station.

by 3:30 pm

Arrive back at Union Station. Head home proud of the work you accomplished and inspired to stay involved throughout the year.

I've done this day previous and have enjoyed it, 2 years ago we painted murals on the walls of a school.

I've also volunteered to pass out vonlunteer packets, set up, etc.

If people are interested I'll start a chainlink team. I know it doesn't involve biking there, but we can all bike to the united center.

I like this idea. I will donate my time as it's available.

suggestion on starting a new group:  We as a cycling community that is promoting just that, should have a group name that is "cycling-obvious".

oh btw, I'm mostly in it for the cape.
