The Chainlink

Hey there, I'm writing from St. Louis where we only have an inch or so of snow, but it is cold, and there is ice.  I have to deliver some final papers downtown today, and was trying to figure out what to do about icepatches, when suddenly I remembered an old spool of picture-hanging wire that I have.  I wrapped it pretty tightly around my tires and rims- hooking each twist in with the last twist- and took it out on some sidewalk ice, and it totally worked!

what a sweet idea !  I love it !

can you share a photo of them? that would be great!

how do you stop?

Yeah, that whole braking issue is a big fail unless you have hub / disc / coaster brakes, or an inflated airbed to hold up in front of you at every intersection.

Otherwise the idea reminds me of Yaxtrax, which work awesomely, too!

I should have mentioned, this bike has coaster breaks.  Good point!  Also, I have those puncture resistant tires with really thick rubber.  I was thinking that it would be a bad idea to use that kind of wire on normal tires because it's made up of lots of tiny wires interwoven, and they did wear out on the concrete, and fray, and they really frayed too.
