The Chainlink

Tonight my friend Laura and I were sitting on a bench just south of North Avenue beach on the lakefront trail when a van of cops pulled up and asked us to leave. It was around 12:45 AM and they stopped just passed where we were and blurted something unclear at us. We asked what they had said and they backed up and yelled at us to leave. We got up and started to pack up and they kept telling us the park was closed and lingering in front of us. As they lingered they continues to be really rude and Laura said "It's fine, were leaving. You don't have to be rude." The cop responded, "I'll arrest you. I'll arrest you for being in the park after it's closed." He then looked at me and said, "Control your woman." Then they sped off at a dangerous rate.

What the fuck, chainlinkers? I write this as we wait for a sergeant to come and hear our complaint, but anyone have any better suggestions? If you've got anything, here are the logistics.

Date: 6/26

Three cops in the car, the driver was a larger white man with longish black hair, possibly in a ponytail.

this shorty after the police went off on the lake shore drive, don't what the hell is going any more is this still Chicago or did move the city to Russia or something, did the critical mass the police were the escort and all was cool but then the mass went onto lake shore drive and bam, the police cloth-line people other were maced after that alot of people got out of there. I heard from one latter on the bike path that other police showed up with tazers and were telling them to clear or they would get tazered. Called abc news and there attitude is oh well it not news worthy, what is bull-shit. thank you Jodie Weiss and the great officer that maced and beat people that were out for a fun ride, and Mr mayor Daley thank you now the city is much safe, bet you will go after the gang banger like that. I think it was to show off, happened right in front of the taste. Makes a person to think about it.
It's a funny thing, dealing with the police. Every time I have some small run-in with the cops, I'm just so grateful that they didn't arrest me that I don't think much about how rude or uncivil they may have been.

However, last night my girlfriend and I went to Oak Street beach at about 9:30. We knew it was closed. It was just so damn hot out. We got to swim for about 10 minutes until some cops came along and told us that it wasn't allowed, that the parks department didn't want anyone in the water after 7pm. And they were SO NICE about it. They seemed sorry to have to kick us out, said they hoped we'd had a chance to cool off. If the cops had been assholes, I would have waited til they left and then got right back in. As it was, we didn't want to take advantage of their kindness, so we went home. I wish there was someone I could call and thank for these men who were doing their job in a respectful and friendly way.
Today a CPD officer was very polite and thoughtful to me in some minor traffic incident. The Chicago Police is a vast and diverse group of men and women. Some of them are thoughtful, rational, even gracious. Some of them are very definitely not. Much like the people who post in Chainlink discussions of this sort, I might add, or like people in any other walk of life. Incidentally, I think everyone here is perceptive enough to sort through anyone's postings, no matter the status of the poster's command of written English. I have noted with amusement that absolutely every single self-appointed grammar police officer has committed various and numerous solecisms, misspellings and grammatical errors of his or her own. I would be happy to document these if there is any question.
