Let's Stop Bitching about the Oil Spill and DO SOMETHING

I want to organize a fundraising event, or a series of them if it's a popular idea. Let's do something besides ride around booing at gas stations, guys. Let's be a proactive community of advocates for cleaner, healthier transportation and send a positive message to our city.

I'm thinking the first of such events could be a "by-donation" bike wash. Let's get out our chain-brite, our toothbrushes, our chain cleaners, our rags, etc and spend a Saturday cleaning bikes, say at the Polish Triangle or some other popular intersection for bike traffic.

Then let's send all that money to a relief fund for the Gulf. Maybe we have employers who will match our contributions? Maybe ActiveTrans will sponsor? Who knows?

Also, I'd love to make spoke cards to hand out to anyone who donates any amount of money for the event.

I'm just tired of being a bitch about it. I want to feel like I did something, and my limited ability to actually travel south and clean the coast with my hands means I have to clean something here and send money to the people who ARE more capable than I am!

So what do you guys think? Can we do this?

Gosh Thanks Kevin, I posted something productive before Michael showed his inability to read so here ya go. Your post helped us get back on track so well! ;-)

A Repost to get back on track:

But you raise an interesting point. Perhaps rather than givin the money to an NPO that we don't know we sponsor a dinner. Either for a family or if enough is raised, a group of families. That puts people to work while letting a couple families get there mind off bills and cookin and cleaning. Just spit balling but in those high stress situations it's always nice when someone just makes ya sit down and eat.
I would be willing to donate some cleaners, solvents, or prizes for whatever. There are generally freebies I can get from my parts distribution reps. Water bottles and so forth. I've spent a ton of money with them this year so I'd love to hit them up. I can check this out on Monday. Polish T. also works for Me...
Guys, I am so sorry for being absent

My computer has been in the shop since Thursday and my family was here all weekend. I'm having a hard time keeping up with everything online.

Can we get most people on board with the weekend after the 4th?
Make it so, Joe. Post it as a date/event. Lets see the RSVP's
Right on, Iggi.

Gabe, can I confirm you can secure us the location?

Laura, any word on a worthy cause or group? (anyone else want to have a say in this?)

I feel weird starting an event for raising money, not knowing who we're raising it for :-P
per Gabe:
S&G owner is gone for the day today, will look into it again tomorrow.
Thanks Iggi. I can read Clink from my phone but can't post. Oh well.

So when I talk to john I'm gonna say Saturday the 10th? Do we have times in mind? I can say we are goin with the feed the families in the Gulf idea until we get something for sure and always say we changed it.

Lemme know tonight and I'll call in the morning ;-)
Oh Yeah, and in the "Let's do somethin" vein. Who would be interested in Critical Mass Brookfield?

If you are unaware Brookfield is where 2 drivers were given slaps on the wrists for intentionally striking 2 cyclists. (1 received 10 days in jails and "intensive probation" and the other just "intensive probation" - don't know what intensive probation is but sure seems like bullshit - they were 20 and 19 years of age for the record).

Was thinkin' we could get a LARGE bus (say 40-60 seats) that has the storage for luggage below (i.e. bikes) take a ride to brookfield and have a mass. Perhaps get some volunteers from the National Lawyers Guild and some nice home made posters.

Bus's cost money unless a bunch of you own econovans. So we would need peeps to chip in but this would seem to be a worthy cause. (cycling to Brookfield isn't out of the question as well just trying to gauge interest.)

So takers? Better plans? Ideas?
One last shot as this thread seems to have gone in the tank.

I spoke to the owner of S&G's about July 10th and he said no problem. John's a good dude! ;-)

The American Red Cross is an easy fix if we don't wanna think about NPO's for now.

Is this still happening?
Absolutely! Let's do it!

Cool. S&G's is at the corner of Southport and Lincoln. There is a side of the building that has no window's so we won't interfere with business. ;-) John said whatever time is good for us. I would plan on having breakfast there cause I love the place. ;-)

You're the leader dude, this is your show! ;-)
Without everyone else's help there is no show
