Possible Stolen Bikes Spotted @ Ashland Flea Market w photos

These bikes were spotted at the Ashland Swap O Rama Ashland @ 42nd st.
Fellow chainlinkers and Chicago cyclists rode to the Swap O Rama this morning to reclaim and find stolen bicycles. We are working in numbers to combat thievery. Here is today's list:

-Specialized crossroads pink rims 
-Gold trek w brown front deep v pink and white saddle bullhorns 
-Black trek 1000 with rack 
-Green specialized stumpjumper, new tires 
-Black Specialized transition carbon with animal rights stickers 
-Blue trek 7.3 
-Felt team carbon argyl on top tube 
-Trek 1000 alpha series reed white and blue 
-Black republic 
-Chrome pista with straight stash handlebars 
-Specializes sirrus black 
-Motobecane record red 
-Giant cypress silver 
-Bianchi volpe green 
-Jamis beatnik

Just curious--did the vendors see that you were taking pictures of the bikes?

If you have your police report number, apparently, you can make a claim. I guess it doesn't hurt to have a documentary photo of your bike too-boot. When my Performance 203R was stolen, I knew everything about it, the brand of seat, my wierd modifications, the dent on the top tube. I keep the police report and the USPS police report (stolen on federal property) with me all the time, just in case I see it.

If it's not raining and you're looking for something to do tomorrow, stop by any of the local flea markets. There are at least 3 swap o rama's that i know of: Alsip, Melrose Park, and Ashland. I've also seen/recovered bikes from Maxwell st. Market. Get out and give em hell! Take a camera and get what documentation you can. Being in the bicycle industry, I see and hear heartbreaking stories daily.
Don't fear, and lets give them hell. If it's raining don't bother. Most thieves don't have reserved spaces and flea markets. So they are less likely to show up in bad weather.

I've enjoyed these crackdowns and look forward to more. Thanks Doom, for re-listing/re-starting this event. Let's keep pressuring these MFs.

Let's try to get some of this discussion centralized over in this group, just because it will be easier to keep it organized, but I definitely think we should have more rides and I, for one, would be up for invading Alsip next week. Just 17 miles from Hyde Park, and I'll bring coffee for anyone who wants to meet at the fountain at 55th and the Lakefront Path.

Yesterday was shocking. The bikes were very, very obviously stolen.

Not to sound too naive, would contacting the CPD help this situation?

I think contacting several people with information from this thread and any other trips would be a good idea. Let the CPD, the alderman, and the media know what's going on. If we want to make a real difference we need to get the word out to the "authorities" as well as the public at large. Not just where the stolen bikes are going, but to educate people that cable locks are no good -- if you look at the registry, most of the stolen bikes weren't properly locked. Even starting with letters to the editor for the paper about some of these issues could help.

Note that you will also be alerting the thieves and vendors. I know some of you regard this as a means to shut down some of the theft, but it will also shut down what can and should become an effective means of recovering stolen bikes.

CPD can't really do anything about "stolen bikes," they need specific info on specific stolen bikes. In fairness to them they showed up in less than ten minutes yesterday after such a bike was spotted, and even though the vendor disappeared into the ether the officer I talked to wasn't put out at all by that and emphasized that I should call him right back there if I spotted the bike again.

The press would need a hook to get involved. If a coordinated campaign can end up recovering a few bikes that would certainly be a good hook, so the thing to do is join the group and start trying to lay hands on some bikes.

Hello there,
I had a Bianchi Volpe stolen a couple months ago in wicker park, have photos, original receipt, but no serial number...are there any pictures of this? it was sage green with red lettering....thanks to this community and efforts to suffocate these thieves

I went to the Fox Flea Market in Rosemont this morning. There were several bikes there, but most of them were department store kids bikes or old vintage bike. I did see a couple of teenage kids try to sell a bike to a vendor and thought it looks suspicious. The bike was a blue Raleigh roadbike with a chrome headtube. It looked pretty nice.

I didn't see anything matching it in the directory.

does anyone remember the highlight colors on the black republic? i had one stolen that had green handelbars and one red and one yellow wheel. thanks
