its never too soon to go camping camping ride (MAY RIDE 5/22, 5/23)

this thread is for keeping all the info organized for the MAY camping ride to Illinois Beach State Park in Zion.

When you ask...well, due to popular availability this will be held on 5/22 and 5/23.  Please RSVP via the link below The RSVP will need to be closed the last week of April so that we have a hard confirmation of persons and needed campsites since we need to reserve those and try to get the sites next to eachother.  They do not have group sites.  Sites are limited to 4 adults and two tents.

Metting place will be North Shore Channel Trail entrance at Lawrence & California.

I WANNA GOOOOOOOOO
I have done this exact trip last may. From Humbolt park all the way to Illinois beach state park.

I may not be able to make the camping trip, but I may be heading up to Gurnee that weekend (my plans for that weekend are still up in the air) and If I am not camping with you guys, I would love to ride along with you until I have to part company.

The route generated by google maps will take you too far north of the camping area and ends in a "day use only" area. the actual campsites are south of the old nuclear power plant.
I know a quick way to get off of the McClory trail on to Wadsworth road. it is a bit tricky, but will save a few miles and take you directly into the camping area.

Halfway up to Zion (at roughly the 22 mile mark) is a really good hot dog place in Highwood called "The Mean Wiener." I highly recommend it.

If anyone wants to ask me questions about the route or the campsites I would be more than happy to help anyone out.
I'm in - work permitting! Not a bad ride either.
Since I'm also going to Zion, possibly a different day, could someone fill me in on if I need to reserve a camp site, the costs, etc?

Thank you.
only certain sites are reservable. 4 adults/two tents per site. 30 buckaroos per site.

Thanks for the info. Do you think We'll need a reservation (probably 4 of us)? Most likely on the 22nd like you guys. Also, do the sites that allow alcohol, do they fill quick?

I'm looking forward to the ride!

A few notes from when Cam and I did this trip last year:

1. We didn't bring much food with us since there's lot of places to stop on the way.
2. Near the state park is plenty of supplies like fire wood and burgers etc so no need to bring a cooler, just make a run after we set up camp.
3. The turn off to the state park is not marked at all, basically there is a little strip of single track at Beach Rd or Wadsworth Rd. Overpass. But otherwise the route is pretty easy and mostly path.
Ok...registration is closed. Now to reserve those sites. Site 203 has already been reserved by Shawn C. i just need to verify they will honor that.

So far, Michelle, Liz, Shar, S, and i believe Jami have offered to make site reservations. That puts us down for 7 sites. That gets us for 28-35 people (depends if they will let us have 5 ppl in a site). Right now we have 37 RSVPs.

I will be posting later on after i speak with Debbie at the grounds again so i can clarify the registration details.
I'll be coming from the north to rendezvous with the main group at Illinois Beach State Park. I'll be the one wearing a Bike Fed (Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin) T-shirt. I'll be coming in off Wadsworth Rd. IBSP has some very good and one not so good memories for me. Hope to see you at IBSP.
