Any recommendations for a new crankset? What are you using?

Hey all, I'm in the market for a new crankset for a fixie. I've gone to quite a few bikeshops and heard a lot of different, sometimes contradictory opinions on what's good and what's junk. Right now, the frontrunner for my new cranks are ones made by Pade. I've heard Bulletproof is the cheapest and for good reason (they're junk), Origin8 is ok but not very stiff, and I've had one recommendation for Stronglight. I'm looking for something low-end, preferably under $100 for cranks and chainwheel, 46 or 48 tooth, 130 BCD, 68mm shell width, in case any of that matters for your suggestions. So what are you using/what do you recommend?

sugino rd they run right around 100 for crankset and bottom bracket
Were you referring to Pake cranks? If so, I have a 48 that I've not had any problems with. Got it at Irv's and it's still pluggin away on my Grand Prix fixie loaner. Other than that, I have no problem with the cheapie FSA Vero track that came on my Flite.

I've heard good things about the RD. Never had a chance to test though...

Good luck brotha.

Cheers

haha, I did mean Pake. I think I'm going to get those (if I can find them). I've been having a hell of a time finding shops with the cranks I want, and I don't want to order them.
Head down here to Pilsen and stop by Irv's @ Racine and 18th. He usually has the Pake's in stock. And they're pretty cool cats.

Cheers
i've got a sugino rd and it does the trick. pretty much fits the specs your looking for and the price. depending on the build though, i'd recommend saving the extra couple weeks pay and getting something badass like a miche primato or a sugino 75. if i had it to do over, thats what i'd do cos i spent the money on the rd, only to later spend the money on the miche. otherwise, the rd is a sweet crank, its stiff enough for street riding, but not the stiffest.
Start off with a shimano sealed BB ($35). I used bulletproof before and never had any issues ($30). Rocket chain ring ($20).
Here's one:

I think they have these for not a lot more locally at Tati Cycles too (in Hyde Park).
If ya need some cranks I got 'em. Campy Mirage in black. It's a double and you could chuck the 53. You'll need a Campy BB which can be had for around $20.

$25 barely used. How about it?
Umm....It's for a triple but you can still use it no prob with a long enough BB.

May I suggest going used? I am a scrounger of Craig's List, flea markets and most importantly the Serotta forum marketplace. I have acquired over a dozen used high-end cranks all for between $30 and $80, including Dura-Ace, Campy Record, etc. You can buy older Dura-Ace track cranks for between $50 and $90 and they will beat the crap out of anything you can buy new for less than $100. I even have a Dura-Ace track crank on my wife's Raleigh 3-speed...just because!

Cheers Bart. Good luck.
im in the market for a new one as well. just need to find some money now. and i dont wanna replace my BB since i just did that a couple months ago.
I have Origin8 cranks with 46 tooth chain ring. I like 'em. Not cheap, but not expensive either. Check out Alien and IRO. Both sell nice, inexpensive track cranks.
