This is exactly why the registry was started (no report there, guess it's not quite -that- important to him?)
I am always curious how people locked up their bikes that were stolen. Cable lock, basic U-lock, Yellow or orange U-lock? Questions questions. The stolen bike registry does not clarify the EXACT type of lock used. They need to add options for all the locks out on the market, brand and type. F-ing thieves :(
Very good point. Paul said he'd have time to devote to the registry soon-- anything else you can think of?
I'd love to see the gmaps view broken out so you can view thefts by date range, bike type, lock type, etc. (no idea whether that's even possible).

ooh...kinda like the homicide tracker redeye offers? it'd be nice to see all the variables involved in the theft. and...maybe show bike related assaults on said map as well? (or is that crossing two separate things)

Whenever I think of getting a new bike for commuting I don't primarily because I don't want it stolen. Anything I accidentally leave on my bike that's not attached is gone by the time I get out of work. I ride my mountain bike to work, for the summer I'd love a nice comfortable commuter, but really why bother if I'm not going to be able to enjoy it very long? My spiked tires will be here in a few days, I'm going to have to get locking skewers or something so I can keep them.

The short and gray days getting you down, huh? One suggestion: Use two U-locks. I've been doing it for nearly 3 years, including two new bikes that I bought during that time. No one has ever touched my bike let alone stolen it. I park downtown, at Metra stations, etc.

If you lock your bike carefully every time and don't leave valuables on your bike, the risk of getting your bike stolen in this fine town is smaller than most people make it out to be.

I would love to clone the registry into a similar site to record assaults on cyclists of various types but I don't have the techy chops and haven't been able to sell the need for it to anyone who does.

Double U-locker here too; 5 years? Watch, no bike when I get out of here . . .
