Scary. I ride down Damen all the time, I have no idea how a car could be moving fast enough to kill someone. Damen usually has few speed demons, it's very residential at that point. I've always considered Damen north of Diversey to be extremely safe, but you can't be too careful.

Stay safe folks.

Is there a planned ride to the wake this evening?
Ironically, Damen IS considered the friendlier side street compared to the nearby Western. The theory about the truck's possible partial involvement may be valid, and/or someone else mentioned the road has a poor surface there, and/or some other cause of fall. Would need a very close witness to be sure.

Thanks to all who shared the details and opportunities around this.
The road is pretty shotty there but only if you are going north

Just found out a memorial ride is planned for Sunday evening:

"It takes off at 7pm from Metropolis Coffee (1039 W Granville Ave) and will follow her route to Liza's spot at the corner of Wellington and Damen by Hamlin Park in Roscoe Village. All are welcome."

Look folks, she and her friend went in between a CTA bus and a truck going south bound on Damen at Wellington at a red light. Liza, at some point, fell over and landed underneath the truck. The light turned green, and she was unfortunately run over, resulting in a fatal injury. It was a freak accident and nothing could have prevented it besides all present parties not being present. This should be a lesson to us all about how fragile life is. We can not cast blame because we were not there, nor can we know how tragic this is for the family and friends. Let us all end the discussion now.
It doesn't matter who's fault this is. It's a fellow rider gone down. We had way too many accidents this past year. You need to be a smart rider to be a safe one. Anyone could be riding for year's and never had a fall; But then you do fall doesn't mean you need to go practice in a school yard or parking lot. You just never know when you may slip. It could even well being just walking on the side walk. I do believe that every person should take a bike safety class. Sometimes you just can't avoid when it's your time. These last few days I ride in the day with my light on and flashing on my helmet and handlebars, it's never enough light that one could have. But the more you do have the better your chances are to be seen. I feel so bad for the family of this young lady. My thought on being to close or back drafting is that you justshoukdn't do it on the streets. Yes; on the track or in a race, but not just with your friend. I ride behind my wife; But with a good distances so in case someting just might happen she can stop fast and I won't be on top of her. Just this past summer I've seen a hand full of new ghost bikes. This is one thing I didn't want to see. Please be safe out there.
