The Chainlink

Hi all, I am looking for a place to take my bike to get a tune-up without breaking the bank. I live by "broke college student" standards so the less expensive if possible. I live in portage park and I saw cosmos bikes as a potential location but the prices vary. Thank you!

1.5 hours by bus one way.

1.1 hours by bicycle.

I've always found Ciclo Urbano (Division/Campbell) to be reasonably priced.

I took the build-a-bike class at West Town bikes; it's a $200 suggested donation, they'll work something out if that's hard for you to come up with. You come in with a bike and they show you how to completely overhaul it. They'll give you brake cable, spokes, other small parts as part of the class fee, and if you need things like a seatpost, chain, you can buy them cheap from the bins of spare parts there.

They also have open shop hours where you can come in, do the work yourself with some help/supervision and just pay $10hr to be on a stand plus parts at cost:

Ciclo Urbano is their storefront, they will also do the work for you at reasonable rates.

+1 that the build-a-bike class is fun and worth it.

You are on the north side so you may want to consider The Recyclery which is by the Howard L stop. http://therecyclery.org/. This is another mission oriented group.

Cosmic Bikes on Milwaukee (Chris and Justyna are the former owners of Rapid Transit) will treat you fairly and will give you an estimate on what they think your bike needs so you can decide what is within your budget.

Thank you so much.

+1 on Cosmic Bikes. They're good people, they know their stuff and they'll be straight with you about what kind of work your bike really needs.

The Recyclery is hosting its first Women, Trans, Femme Open Shop on Sunday, June 25. The shop will be open from 6 pm - 9 pm, if you're interested in giving maintenance a go.  If you can't make it this Sunday, WTF Open Shop is the 4th Sunday of each month.  Other weekly open shop hours are

  • Tuesday: 7 pm-9 pm
  • Thursday: 7 pm-9 pm
  • Saturday: 1 pm-5 pm

Thank you Katie. Do you know much it costs?

$10 per hour is the suggested donation.  More if you can, less if you can't.  It's a great environment to learn to wrench on your own bike!

Thank you guys so much!!!!
