Hi All:
I wanted to reach out to Chicagoland cyclists to seek some guidance in my upcoming personal ride through America's Diabetes Belt - https://epic-challenge.org/epic-diabetes-belt/
It'll be a 1,300km ride from Chicago to Atlanta in late May. From Chicago, I plan to ride to Joliet and to Champaign the following morning. Next destinations are Rockville & Terre Haute. I am looking for some help in acquiring local knowledge regarding fastest and safest routes for a road bike and perhaps chance to ride with some of you during the early stage/s of my journey.
Thanks!

Yes, I'm on insulin which I've reduced dramatically with cycling and my newfound nutrition program. I'll be in Chicago to do some recon the last week of April. Would love to meet you and chat more over coffee or a bike ride or both. Let me know if you are up to it.
Edwin,
This would be my suggested route from Millenium Park to Joliet. It runs for the most part on quiet side streets and trails.

I've ridden this many times and I truly enjoy it due to it's diversity. From riding through the Loop and the industrial west side of Chicago, to great suburban riding (Riverside, Brookfield, Willow Springs) and some of the best trail riding that Chicagoland has to offer (The trail is about half way paved, and halfway crushed lime stone. Very rideable with tires of 28mm and wider). I tried to add a few points of interest, and may try to add some more if I have some time.
In Joliet you can connect to the Wauponsee Glacial trail, which brings you close to the exit point of the route mentioned by carfreecommuter.
Good luck!
