“Keep your skin covered, keep the wind off of you, stay dry, and stay visible,” said Jon Londres, Service Manager at Turin Bicycle Chicago.
Londres calls his deep winter gear his “apocalypse suit.” While he says the name in jest, being safe in dangerously cold conditions is a serious subject to him.
“It might take you a few years to accumulate everything, but I highly recommend you don’t skimp,” Londres said.
Londres said he favors layering with breathable gear that helps prevent you from sweating because you’re overheated. The right way to dress, he said, is for optimal temperature while riding.
“If you start out warm, you’re overdressed,” Londres said. “You never want to sweat and then end up cold and wet.”
In addition to their full line of Turin-branded cold weather riding apparel, they like gear by the Portland-based company Showers Pass. In addition to keeping wind and water at bay, their products offer ample reflector panels. During our visit, Turin Mechanic Rene Cervantes emerged from the service bay to model the waterproof, breathable Skyline Pant.
