Photo by Samantha Alfrey Elizabeth McKinley. Although fond of bikes from a young age, Elizabeth's love of cycling blossomed in 2012 when she moved to the city after college and began commuting to work. In 2014, she decided to explore the competitive side of cycling and never looked back. A proud member of BFF Bikes Racing Team, Elizabeth races cyclocross and road, and, this year, she has plans to tackle the grueling world of endurance gravel grinding. When not biking, Elizabeth can be found working as a high school librarian and daydreaming about obscure historical trivia, her next outdoor adventure, and the day she'll finally learn how to bunny hop. First bike? If memory serves, it was a pink, white, and purple Huffy, adorned with handle bar streamers and training wheels. What inspires you to ride? Cycling is, for me, a source of joy – a hobby that promotes physical fitness, social engagement, environmental friendliness, and outdoor adventure. Through cycling, I have met best friends, formed invaluable connections, and I have learned a great deal about simple bike mechanics, weather preparedness, goal setting, and training. I'm continually inspired by the people, the freedom, the adventure, the challenges, and the fun. Any advice for people who are just getting started commuting and/or riding? Cycling in the city is intimidating at first, but the more you ride, the more comfortable you'll feel, and the more fun you'll have. It doesn't matter what kind of bike you ride, what shape you're in, or how much lycra you're wearing. Just be alert, be visible, be smart, be courteous, be rad. Photo by Liz Farina Markel of Tipping Point Photography Do you have a cycling bucket list? What’s on the list? I’m hoping to complete several endurance gravel races this year on my single speed bike. So far, I’ve registered for LandRun 100, Barry Roubaix, and the beast of ‘em all: Dirty Kanza 200. In the long-term, I’d like to try mountain biking again, plan a bike tour (or tours!), give track racing a go, and learn more about bike mechanics. Favorite places to bike to for a snack, drinks, coffee, or food? Food and drink will usually persuade me to ride anywhere and everywhere. I always enjoy riding south on the Lakefront Path, through Calumet, and into Indiana. Sure, Northwest Indiana is not the most scenic of areas, but stepping into Munster Donuts after a long ride is like entering a little utopia. How many bikes do you own? Four! Too many? Not enough? I argue the latter, my bank account argues the former. Photo by Kayci Sterzer |
